Are Lashes Cheaper in Toronto or New York? We Compared 138 Techs

Lashes are the one beauty service priced almost identically everywhere in structure — classic, hybrid, volume, fill — which makes them an unusually clean way to compare two cities.

So we compared them. 138 home-based lash techs, 71 in Toronto and 67 in New York City, and every price each of them publishes.

New York is higher on every single service. But the more interesting part is the bit almost every comparison leaves out.

Toronto vs New York lash prices, side by side

Typical published price, in each city's own currency:

  • Classic full set — Toronto CA$80 · New York US$100 (+25%)
  • Hybrid full set — Toronto CA$90 · New York US$102 (+13%)
  • Volume full set — Toronto CA$100 · New York US$117 (+17%)
  • Fill or refill — Toronto CA$80 · New York US$95 (+19%)
  • Lash lift — Toronto CA$95 · New York US$100 (+5%)

Each figure sits on between 16 and 56 separate vendors, so these are not two salons being compared — they are two markets.

The catch: those are different dollars

Every percentage above compares a Canadian dollar to a US dollar as though they were the same thing. They are not.

A CA$80 classic set and a US$100 classic set look 25% apart. Converted into a single currency at any exchange rate seen in recent years, the real gap is considerably wider — New York lashes cost a Toronto resident meaningfully more than a quarter extra.

We are not going to print a converted figure, because the rate moves and a number published today would be wrong within a month. Check the current rate and do the multiplication yourself. The direction never changes: the nominal gap understates the real one, always.

Why is New York more expensive?

Three things, in order of how much they matter:

Rent, even for home-based vendors. Every tech in this dataset works from home or travels. But the cost of the home is priced into the service, and New York housing costs more.

What the local market will bear. Home-based vendors price against the salons around them. New York salon pricing is higher, which pulls the whole market up.

Density. New York has more techs competing, which you would expect to push prices down — and in one place it does. The lash lift gap is only 5%, the narrowest on the list, and lash lifts are the most standardised, fastest service of the five. Where the service is commoditised, competition compresses the price. Where it is skill-differentiated, it does not.

Which city has more choice?

Close, with a split worth knowing about. Toronto has slightly more lash techs overall. But New York has notably more volume specialists — 56 NYC vendors publish a volume price against 42 in Toronto.

If you want volume or mega volume specifically, New York has the deeper bench. For classic and hybrid, the cities are comparable.

Does this hold for other beauty services?

Not reliably, and it is worth being clear about why. Lashes compare cleanly because the service definitions are consistent between cities. Hair does not — "install" means different things in different markets, and the amount of hair added varies enormously.

Nails sit in between. The one nails comparison we would stand behind is that a New York acrylic full set typically lists at US$60, and both cities show the same internal ordering: regular manicure cheapest, builder gel most expensive.

How we got these numbers

We read the published price lists of every home-based lash tech listed on BuzzGram in Toronto and New York City, and grouped services by what they are rather than what they are named. Each figure is a median of published list prices, shown with the number of separate vendors behind it. We do not publish a figure backed by fewer than eight vendors.

Prices are in each city's local currency, before tip and before add-ons such as removal or travel. More on the method in how we calculate local pricing.
