Nails has the widest honest price range of any beauty category in New York. Not because anyone is overcharging, but because the word "manicure" is doing an enormous amount of work — it covers a $30 service and a $72 service that share almost nothing except the body part.
We read the published price lists of 67 home-based nail techs across New York City — 1,148 priced services — and separated them out.
What do nails cost in NYC?
- Regular manicure — typically $30. (16 vendors)
- Gel manicure — typically $50. (27 vendors)
- Pedicure — typically $50. Most between $40 and $65. (15 vendors)
- Fill — typically $55. Most between $45 and $65. (31 vendors)
- Acrylic full set — typically $60. Most between $50 and $75. (32 vendors)
- BIAB or builder gel — typically $72. Most between $55 and $101. (20 vendors)
What is the actual difference between these?
Regular manicure ($30). Shape, cuticles, regular polish. Chips in a few days. Nothing is added to the nail.
Gel manicure ($50). Same prep, but gel polish cured under a lamp. Lasts two to three weeks without chipping. Still only polish — no length, no added strength.
Acrylic full set ($60). A hard layer built on the nail, usually with added length. This is a different service: it changes the shape and length of your nail, and it needs filling every two to three weeks.
BIAB or builder gel ($72). A flexible gel overlay applied over your natural nail to strengthen it, usually without adding much length. The most expensive line on the list because it is the most technical, and the one most people book when they are trying to grow their own nails out.
If you have been booking "the cheapest manicure" and wondering why it never lasts, this is why. You have been buying regular polish.
Why the fill price is the number that matters
As with lashes, the recurring cost dwarfs the first appointment. An acrylic set at $60 followed by $55 fills every three weeks is about $950 a year.
Two questions worth asking:
- Is removal included, or extra? Soak-off is commonly a separate $15 to $25, and it is the single most common surprise on a nail invoice.
- Is nail art included? Usually not beyond a simple accent. Detailed art is frequently priced per nail, which adds up quickly on a full set.
What makes a price higher than the typical?
A set well above $75 is usually one of four things, and none of them are padding:
- Length. Extra-long nails take more product and more time.
- Art. Hand-painted detail, chrome, encapsulation.
- Shape. Stiletto and coffin shapes take longer to file evenly than square or almond.
- Structure work. Correcting or rebuilding damaged nails.
Send a reference photo when you ask for a quote. Nail pricing is close to impossible to give accurately without seeing what you want, and most techs will quote precisely from an image.
How to avoid the two most common surprises
Ask these before the appointment, not in the chair:
- "Does that price include removal of what I have on now?"
- "I want this design — what does that come to in total?" with the photo attached.
Both take one message. Between them they cover nearly every nail bill that comes in higher than expected.
How we got these numbers
We read the published price lists of home-based beauty vendors listed on BuzzGram in New York City and grouped them by what the service actually is, not what it is called. "Volume set", "mega volume" and "full volume set" all land in the same bucket.
Every figure is a median of published list prices, with the number of separate vendors behind it shown next to it. We use the median rather than the average so one $400 outlier cannot drag a category upward. Where fewer than eight vendors publish a price for something, we leave it out rather than guess.
These are list prices in US dollars, before tip and before any add-on. They are what vendors say they charge, which is not always what someone pays after a consultation. More on the method in how we calculate local pricing.

FAQ
How much is a gel manicure in NYC?
Typically $50 with a home-based tech, based on 27 vendors. A regular polish manicure is closer to $30.
How much is a full set of acrylics in New York City?
Typically $60, with most vendors between $50 and $75, based on 32 vendors. Fills run around $55.
What is BIAB and why does it cost more?
BIAB, or builder gel, is a flexible gel overlay applied over the natural nail to strengthen it while it grows. It is typically $72 in NYC — the most technical service on most price lists, and the one to ask for if your goal is growing out your own nails.
Is nail removal included in the price?
Usually not. Soak-off removal is commonly a separate charge of $15 to $25 and is the most frequent unexpected item on a nail bill. Always ask before booking.
How much do acrylic nails cost per year?
At NYC's typical $60 set and $55 fill on a three-week cycle, roughly $950 a year.
Why is nail art priced separately?
Detailed art is often charged per nail because the time varies enormously by design. Sending a reference photo when you ask for a quote will get you an accurate total up front.
