How Much Does a Private Chef Cost in Toronto?

A plated private chef dinner in Toronto is listed at $150 to $225 a guest for three to seven courses, for groups of ten or more. Smaller dinners are often a flat fee instead: one chef lists $1,750 for up to nine guests. Buffet and barbecue packages are listed at $35 to $72 a guest, and weekly meal-prep bundles at $250 to $375 an order. All prices are before tax.

Most private chefs in Toronto quote each event by message rather than publishing prices, so there are too few listings to give a reliable average. Below are the prices chefs do publish, and what they show about how the bill is built.

Why small dinners cost more per guest

A chef's evening costs much the same whether they cook for four or for nine: the shopping, the prep, the travel and the clean-up. That is why small dinners are priced as a flat fee. At four guests, $1,750 works out to about $438 each. At nine it is about $194, close to the per-guest price that starts at ten.

Cost per guest before tax under one Toronto chef's published pricing: $1,750 flat for up to nine guests, then $150 a guest for three courses or $225 for seven from ten guests.

If you are planning dinner for six to nine, the flat fee is fair value. For two to four, ask chefs whether they offer a shorter menu or a minimum spend instead.

What sits on top of the menu price

Tax. Where a chef lists a price "plus tax", that means 13% HST on top in Ontario.

Staff. One Toronto chef lists service staff and bartenders at $42.50 an hour each. Two servers for five hours at a seated dinner adds $425.

The chef's own time. Some chefs list it separately from the food: one lists a head chef rate of $225 and an additional chef at $200.

Add-ons. Usually per guest: one chef charges $5 a guest for an extra salad or side and $10 for an extra main.

Groceries and gratuity. Ask whether ingredients and gratuity are included, especially when a chef quotes their time separately from the menu.

Buffets, barbecues and family-style trays

For bigger, more casual gatherings, packages cost far less than a plated dinner: a buffet at $50 a guest, a family barbecue at $35 and a mixed grill at $72, all from one Toronto chef. Another sells family-style trays from $50 to $150 a tray, from salads and sides to steaks, lamb chops and lobster tails, and a third lists protein add-ons that feed 10 to 12 from $35 to $120.

Cocktail parties are their own format: one chef lists canapés at $100 to $150 a guest for 20 or more.

Weekly meal prep

Meal prep is a different service. The chef cooks a batch, portions it, and you reheat it through the week. One Toronto chef lists themed bundles from $250 for Caribbean-style meals to $375 for high-carb, high-protein, with vegetarian and vegan, West African and Mediterranean bundles in between. Ask how many meals a bundle contains, the portion size, and whether delivery and containers are included. Starting with a single trial week is the low-risk way in, as covered in how to find a private chef near you.

How we got these numbers

Most private chefs on BuzzGram in Toronto do not publish prices, and those that do use different formats: per guest, flat fees, hourly rates and trays. So we have not averaged them. Every price in this guide is a single chef's listing, quoted as written, from October 2026, in Canadian dollars. The per-guest chart applies one chef's published flat fee and per-guest prices to different group sizes. More in how we calculate local pricing.
